Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advisory Group (DEIAG)
The NYGC Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advisory Group (DEIAG) is our employee-driven, cross-functional DEI advisory committee. Formed in 2020, DEIAG is composed of employees and trainees representing departments and laboratories across the NYGC. Membership is open to all, and we have 34 current employees and 15 alumni.
The DEIAG Goals
- Providing meaningful opportunities for learning and growth around DEI issues
- Fostering and cultivating a supportive, welcoming, and inclusive culture at the NYGC
- Promoting and supporting an equitable and inclusive research and training environment
- Evaluating institutional barriers to inclusion and equity
DEIAG Co-Leads
The DEIAG’s co-leads meet regularly with members of the NYGC’s Senior Leadership DEI Committee to share information about activities, advise on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the NYGC, and raise concerns on behalf of employees.
The DEIAG Initiatives
- Celebrating and giving increased visibility to our diverse staff. This includes writing articles and feature spotlights related to DEI-focused celebrations and events, including Women’s History Month, Alzeimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National Holocaust Remembrance Day.
- Providing opportunities for our team to get together and talk about DEI-related topics, including safe space meetings following geopolitical events, a book club, affinity groups, and film viewings followed by small group discussions. The group has also created internal communication platforms through multiple slack channels, wiki resources and monthly DEIAG meetings.
- Providing educational opportunities, including mentorship career panels, training, a summer internship program, and an early career development program.
- Working with HR and senior leadership to update our workplace practices, such as initiating an annual workplace culture survey, reviewing where we post our jobs to attract a diverse pool of candidates, suggesting exit interview and new hire check-in questions, creating and promoting employee and trainee awards, and updating organization policies.
