Dr. Lappalainen’s contribution to the study of functional genetic variation in human populations was recognized through her election to the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).
EMBO has announced the election of 120 world-class life scientists to new membership, joining a network of more than 2,000 researchers from Europe and beyond. Among the new members is Tuuli Lappalainen, PhD, a Senior Associate Member at the New York Genome Center, Director of National Genomics Infrastructure at SciLifeLab, and Professor in Genomics at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden.
The organization aims to “support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a European research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.” Members can provide support for EMBO activities by serving on the organization’s Council, committees and editorial boards and mentoring young scientists in the scientific community, for example.
“My background is perhaps a bit different from the molecular biology focus of many members of EMBO, as I come from human genetics and computational genomics. However, I believe that the greatest discoveries in biology come from collaborations where people tackle the same questions from different perspectives and with varying toolkits. The network that EMBO provides is a fantastic way to advance these kinds of interactions,” says Dr. Lappalainen.
Dr. Lappalainen will be formally recognized during EMBO’s annual Members’ Meeting, which will take place in Heidelberg, Germany this upcoming October.
