The New York Genome Center (NYGC) joined the ALS Association on Sunday, October 18 at the Hudson Valley Walk to Defeat ALS. The Walk to Defeat ALS is the ALS Association’s biggest annual event, which raises funds that allow local chapters to sustain care services and support research. NYGC’s team participated in the previous New York City, New Jersey and Long Island walks this year.
Last year the ALS Association made a financial commitment of $2.5 million to support NYGC’s Center for Genomics of Neurodegenerative Disease (CGND). The funds were matched by a $2.5 million grant from the Tow Foundation.
The mission of the CGND is to harness state-of-the-art genetic, genomic and bioinformatics tools to gain insights into motor neuron disease mechanisms and to use this knowledge to identify new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to these devastating diseases. Funding by The ALS Association will further the work of the Center as it combines the expertise of world-class scientists dedicated to discovering the genetic underpinnings of ALS.
