Our Communities
The NYGC affinity groups (self-organized groups of NYGC employees, students and postdocs with a shared identity or interest), are in the early stages of development at NYGC; we have launched one so far and we have more coming soon. We hope these groups will help foster inclusion for individuals from a variety of backgrounds, offering them a platform to come together and highlight their community’s unique needs. These groups are also a great way to connect with others across laboratories and departments and provide opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, networking, support, education, and outreach into the local community. Affinity groups are open to everyone, regardless of whether individuals share that identity or are an ally.
Affinity groups at the NYGC are launched and led by employees and/or trainees, with financial and logistical support from administration. Each group has an advisor from our senior management team and employee co-leads.
The Rainbow Connection
The Rainbow Connection is an affinity group dedicated to the NYGC’s LGBTQIA+ community and our allies. This group celebrates LQBTQIA+ people and culture, raises awareness of issues facing our community, explores complex issues of intersectionality, provides a safe space for discussion, encourages community building, promotes benefits unique to LGBTQIA+ people, and ensures a safe and inclusive environment for the LGBTQIA+ community.
The Rainbow Connection is a resource to help LGBTQIA+ individuals embrace their uniqueness, promote our culture, and to provide visibility, advocacy, mentorship, and social opportunities for the NYGC’s LGBTQIA+ community and allies. We are always looking for new ideas and ways to promote community and encourage everyone to join our fabulous group. Please contact Andrew Rice (arice@nygenome.org) for more information on how to join and be a part of the Rainbow Connection!
