Postdoctoral Training Program
NYGC is dedicated to training tomorrow’s leaders. We provide scientific training, mentoring, and a diverse research environment supplemented by close interactions with our colleagues at nearby universities and medical centers. We recognize that postdocs are one of the prime engines of scientific advancement at NYGC and we aim to provide a holistic training program that will develop them to the fullest of their abilities.
Program Overview
Postdoctoral trainees are scientists who come to the New York Genome Center for further training in their chosen discipline under the mentorship and supervision of a NYGC faculty member.
During the appointment, the postdoc will undertake activities under the direction of a faculty mentor that support the postdoc’s professional development, preparatory to a planned career in academia, industry, or government. The nature and scope of these responsibilities will be determined by the postdoc and faculty mentor in a consultative manner, but in all cases, postdocs are encouraged and expected to publish the results of their research during the period of their appointment.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to the NYGC’s core mission. We are committed to fostering a workplace environment that is welcoming and equitable for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQIA+ status, disability, or religion. Our postdoc program encourages applications who belong to historically underrepresented groups in biological, computational, biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences research. This includes individuals from racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and women. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion at the NYGC
Funding Your Postdoctoral Research
As a postdoctoral researcher, securing your own research funding is an essential step in advancing your academic career. While many postdocs begin with financial support from their Principal Investigator (PI), there often comes a time when you will need to pursue independent funding to support your work. This process not only enhances your research portfolio but also demonstrates your ability to secure competitive grants—a key factor in establishing yourself as an independent investigator.
NYGC provides access to Pivot, a comprehensive tool for identifying funding opportunities tailored to your research interests. Pivot offers a wide range of grant listings from various sources, including government agencies, private foundations, and international organizations. We encourage all postdocs to take advantage of this valuable resource. If you need assistance with setting up an account or navigating the platform, please reach out to the Research Administration team.
It is important to note that all grant proposals, including those for postdoctoral fellowships, must be reviewed and submitted by the Research Administration team on behalf of the postdoc. This ensures that all submissions comply with institutional and sponsor requirements, maximizing the chances of success for your funding applications.
