The Evolution of the NYGC
The NYGC has a rich history that spans over a decade of genomics research and innovation.
The Genesis of Genomic Excellence
The New York Genome Center was founded in 2011 by New York academic and medical scientists, civic leaders, and philanthropists, based on a vision of highly collaborative genomic research. The goal was to establish a central hub of genomic infrastructure, technology development, and expertise with direct participation of the leading academic and medical institutions in New York (Institutional Founding Members (IFMs)). A key objective was to develop and apply genomic technologies to the advancement of basic and medical science, and the goals of genomic or precision medicine. The realization of this vision was made possible by the philanthropic support of the Simons Foundation and the Carson Family Trust, the wider philanthropic community of New York, and with generous support by the State of New York.
Our Remarkable Growth
Key elements of the New York Genome Center’s collaborative vision were to establish joint tenure track faculty appointments between the New York Genome Center and the Institutional Founding Members, and to organize scientific “working groups” of Institutional Founding Member faculty to focus on the development and application of genomic technology to basic and medical research. The highly collaborative nature of our research has led to multiple collaborative research grants, participation in national and international consortia, and prestigious National Institute of Health Center grants (National Institute of Mental Health Center of Common Disease Genomics (CCDG) and Center of Excellence in Genomics).
In addition, close collaboration between the New York Genome Center innovation lab and New York Genome Center faculty labs has led to highly impactful contributions to the development of single-cell multiomic technologies with powerful computational tools. The successful implementation of this collaborative vision has attracted exceptional scientific talent and research funding, and generated high-impact publications, placing the New York Genome Center among the premier genomic research institutions internationally in a little over 10 years from its founding.
