Michael Zody, PhD
Scientific Director, Computational Biology, NYGCMichael Zody is the Scientific Director of Computational Biology at the New York Genome Center (NYGC). His research focuses on genetics of autism and Alzheimer’s, and since 2020, he is also coordinating COVID-19 sequencing efforts at the NYGC. Prior to joining the NYGC, Dr. Zody led informatics efforts at the Whitehead Institute Center for Genome Research during the Human Genome Project, where his group oversaw assembly, QC, and release of one quarter of the draft sequence of the human genome. He also co-led mouse genome sequencing efforts and was an analysis group leader for the mouse and chimpanzee genome analysis consortia. Dr. Zody also spent several years working on human infectious viruses, including Dengue, West Nile, Hepatitis C, and HIV.
Prior ExperienceDr. Zody holds a doctorate in medical science from Uppsala University and a master’s in metallurgy and bachelor’s in materials science and engineering from MIT. In addition to his research work, Dr. Zody has developed and taught many classes on sequencing technology and computational genomic analyses.
